The government in Kuala Lumpur has added three new sections to the rail network for local mass transit in the MRT Malaysia project. New trains are also required for these sections. HUBER+SUHNER supplied suitable roof-top antennas in the form of the SENCITY® Rail MIMO.
The Malaysian city of Kuala Lumpur has a major problem with gridlocked roads. To relieve the situation, the government wants to encourage more commuters to use public transport. With this in mind, it has extended the rail network to include three additional sections. An additional 400,000 commuters will be able to take the train every day as a result.
Antennas for information systems
Nowadays commuters who use local transport demand outstanding comfort and service. This also includes a modern passenger information system that provides, for example, information on next stops and connections. The IT service provider Global Telecom provided parts for the train-borne infrastructure for this system. In this project, the company used SENCITY® Rail MIMO roof-top antennas from HUBER+SUHNER. These antennas transmit data between the train and the track, enabling timetable information to be supplied to passengers from the control centre. In turn, the control centre also receives valuable information about the current position and travel time of the train.
Global Telecom was looking for a particularly robust antenna that could withstand vibrations and shocks on the train roof and also cope with outdoor influences such as ozone and moisture. The product also had to comply with the current environmental and fire safety requirements in the rail market. HUBER+SUHNER had the ideal solution in the form of the SENCITY® Rail MIMO antenna.
Experience and expertise
“We were looking for a competent partner who could advise us on how to select the right components and position of the products,” said WooCheol Ham, Manager NI Technology Team from Global Telecom. “HUBER+SUHNER's years of experience in the rail market was an asset for us.”
Global Telecom was thus able to bring an important project to a successful conclusion with a new partner. This could provide the opportunity for both companies to win more orders in an interesting new market: Kuala Lumpur.
