Radio Frequency components used in the Wi-Fi hotspot on the Fan Mile in Berlin

September saw the start of the pilot phase of a public gigabit Wi-Fi access point on the famous Fan Mile in Berlin, Germany. HUBER+SUHNER is providing Wi-Fi antennas and coaxial cables, thus playing its part in enabling users in the area to surf, chat and stream for free for 30 minutes.

At the the premier conference for chip, board and systems design engineers in the high speed communications and semiconductor communities HUBER+SUHNER will present its newest additions to the well-know connectivity portfolio.

Small Cell for Lausanne Railway Station

Small Cell for Lausanne Railway Station
Small cell technology from HUBER+SUHNER is helping Swiss communications technology provider Amodus to provide an outstanding level of mobile coverage in and around Lausanne railway station. To fulfil the project Amodus implemented for the first time in Switzerland the leading fiber optic small cell solution MASTERLINE Ultimate SC, designed and made by HUBER+SUHNER. This is a plug-and-play cabling system providing daisy chains.

As the system integrator for a well-known Swiss network operator, Amodus is currently involved in a major redesign of Lausanne’s railway station. One of the key project requirements was the provision of a complete and comprehensive coverage for mobile communications. The large-scale project will run over the next 10 years up to 2027. The new railway infrastructure is not yet in place but several new mobile antennas have already been installed to provide improved data transmission. As a trusted partner for Amodus, HUBER+SUHNER is supplying both fiber optic and radio frequency solutions for indoor and outdoor small cells with cable systems, tappers, power splitters, attenuators, cables and antennas, allowing Amodus to deploy communications technology based on an innovative and well-proven product range.

"Plug and play” solutions
In order to achieve a fast and easy-to-install solution with  high data rates, as specified by the network operator, Amodus has chosen HUBER+SUHNER’s innovative MASTERLINE Ultimate small cell solution. “This new fiber optic product is being supplied for the first time in Switzerland,” says Thierry Ruef, HUBER+SUHNER’s sales director for the French regions of Switzerland. Five small cell connectivity systems (MLU SC) in different versions have been delivered in the first order from Amodus, together with Q-ODC jumpers. The MLU SC is a pre-connectorized factory “plug and play” fiber cabling system with a triple small cells connection. This allows the so-called daisy chains for small cells to be very quickly put together.
It was also decided that provider antennas should be installed at several locations outside the railway station, each of which is connected with the MLU SC. Two outputs are dedicated to the 2100 and 2600 MHz antennas of one network provider, the third output is free. In the future, another possibility may be to install provider antennas on the same mast and to connect the MLU SC outputs between them. Further installations will be deployed inside the railway station. As Lausanne railway station has a large number of listed historic monuments, it may take some time for the network operator and Amodus to obtain all the required approvals.

Single supplier
Amodus Project Manager Michael Caamano chose the MASTERLINE ultimate SC for testing and was impressed with the solution: “It was very new on the market, waterproof (IP68) and easy to install which was an important time-saver. The Q-ODC push-pull connector also made it very simple and easy to connect. That makes it the perfect solution for a new mobile communications technology.”

Sometimes such “very new” innovations may need time to achieve market acceptance. Michael Caamano also needed time to introduce the innovation and to convince his customers. HUBER+SUHNER is still the sole supplier for this new small cell solution which provides a big improvement against earlier solutions where splicing was a must for fiber optic assembling. The new solution has all the advantages of being simply plug and play.

Additional information
