RF connectivity within devices

Devices are often designed based on multiple boards and modules. This brings several advantages, such as modularisation and higher flexibility in design questions.

Since most devices have wireless or cellular connectivity, or require transmission of high data rates between boards, a highly flexible and low-cost solution for transmitting RF signals between boards and/or building blocks is required.

Eliminating cabling for reducing costs is common in today’s industry; however, this may increase mechanical stress significantly, since in most cases, a solution for a mechanical overdetermined system needs to be provided. To overcome this, whilst continuing to maintain excellent electrical properties, board-to-board connectors need to be employed.

HUBER+SUHNER offers different board-to-board solutions, including MMBX, MFBX and MBX, allowing board-to-board, board-to-panel and board-to-board-through-panel connectivity. This technology brings features such as blind-mateability and large axial and radial working ranges.

In some cases, whether due to larger distances or other reasons, the solution might be required to use cables between modules. HUBER+SUHNER offers a wide range of connectors and cables for these applications. Board-to-board connectors can also be used in conjunction with cable connectors or other small size connectors might also be feasible. For very high performance and low space requirements, there are also cable connectors with bend-to-the-edge technology available.

Contact bridge

Contact bridge

HUBER+SUHNER Contact-bridge is a fully integrated horizontal board-to-board connection. The product consists of a centre pin (sheet metal) and the dielectric (plastic molded). The Contact-bridge is assembled into a based plate whereas the base plate is then also the outer contact (ground). The size of modules can be further reduced with the Contact-bridge as a fully integrated solution. This product can be used for various connections from board-to-board like RF, signal or power.

MBX

MBX

HUBER+SUHNER MBX connectors are especially developed for board-to-board and board-to-module RF interconnections. The mechanical design is outstanding, allowing the MBX to cope with mechanical misalignment in radial and axial directions and still hold an excellent electrical performance. MBX completes together with the MBX 2nd generation the board-to-board assortment of HUBER+SUHNER with its development based on the well-known board-to-board connector MMBX. MBX fulfils higher requirements with best in class axial misalignment of ±1.2 mm. MBX is the answer to higher integration and miniaturisation. It is the perfect solution for multiple connections from board-to-board / board-to-module and complex stack-ups in radio module applications.

MBX 2nd generation

MBX 2nd generation

Together with the standard MBX, the new MBX 2nd generation is the first choice in board-to-board connections. The MBX 2nd generation board-to-board connection comes along with the well-known and outstanding characteristics of MBX but optimised plating, materials and production process.

MFBX

MFBX

HUBER+SUHNER MFBX and eMFBX connectors are especially developed for high-volume PCB-to-PCB applications. MFBX / eMFBX connectors are tailor-made solutions for medium axial and radial misalignments requirements at frequencies up to 6 GHz. MFBX connectors are based on machining technologies whereas eMFBX is based on stamp and bending.

MMBX

MMBX

HUBER+SUHNER MMBX connectors are especially developed for board-to-board and board-to-module RF interconnections. Along with MBX the board-to-board portfolio of HUBER+SUHNER provides highest flexibility for today´s and future radio module applications. MMBX connectors offer an operation frequency up to 12.4 GHz. The series contains of a wide range of board and cable connectors with a minimum board-to-board distance of only 6.7 mm.

Quick lock connectors

HUBER+SUHNER QMA and QN connectors have a quick-lock coupling mechanism. QMA and QN are easy to mate and allow a high packaging density because no tools are needed.

QMA

QMA

HUBER+SUHNER QMA coaxial connectors are in accordance with QLF standard and available with 50 ohm impedance. The frequency range extends to 18 GHz, depending on the connector and cable type. However most of the QMA connectors are return loss optimised for frequencies up to 6 GHz. The interface is based on the SMA dimension but instead of a threaded coupling mechanism a new snap-lock mechanism is used. The QMA interface has a very similar performance to the SMA, but in addition it offers an easier, faster and safer coupling operation, helping customers to save significantly time during production. The packaging density of QMA is increased compared to SMA connectors thanks to the fact that no torque spanner is required to fasten the coupling nut. QMA is not intermateable with SMA. QMA connectors are also available as waterproof version (IP68) and are compatible with QLF standard.

QN

QN

HUBER+SUHNER QN coaxial connectors are available with 50 ohm impedance. The frequency range extends to 11 GHz, depending on the connector and cable type, however most of the QN connectors are return loss optimised for frequencies up to 6 GHz. The interface is based on the inner dimensions of the N connector, but, instead of a threaded coupling mechanism, a snap-lock mechanism is used. The QN interface has a very similar performance to N, but in addition it offers an easier, faster and safe coupling operation, helping the customers to save significantly on time during production of their systems. The packaging density of QN increased compared to N thanks to the fact that no torque spanner is required to fasten the coupling nut. Additionally the outer dimensions of QN are smaller than N, leading to the advantage that even TNC-size flanges can be used at QN connectors.

Foam radio frequency cables

The product series Spuma, S and SX provide lowest attenuation, high flexibility and optimal shielding. Products from the Spuma series are similar to the LMR® products from Times Microwave.
