September saw the start of the pilot phase of a public gigabit Wi-Fi access point on the famous Fan Mile in Berlin, Germany. HUBER+SUHNER is providing Wi-Fi antennas and coaxial cables, thus playing its part in enabling users in the area to surf, chat and stream for free for 30 minutes.

Street cabinet solutions

Street cabinets are metal or plastic housings placed above ground often on pedestrian pathways. They enable a relatively easy and rapid access to fiber circuits and can handle large fiber capacities. In many ways, they can offer ODF type of flexibility. Street cabinets are often used to terminate larger feeder cables and manage distribution cabling including microducts for blown fiber and/or subscriber drop connections.

Street cabinets also store splitter devices in PON architectures and allow flexible splicing and/or patching for customer-dedicated fibers. Very often they also house active equipment to support Vectoring and G.fast services over copper. Street cabinets need to be secure and strongly built to withstand vandal attacks and traffic accidents.

The core products for fiber management systems are the splice cassettes. The "ACS" (Advanced Cassette System), offers a flexible and modular system which fulfils all fiber security requirements such as bend radius. The Advanced Cassette System (ACS) is a modular and easy-to-use fiber cassette system that can be put together without tools. 3 types of cassettes are available which support high-level fiber infrastructure. 

These include:
• SingleCircuit management (SCM) for specialised applications with higher handling and reliability requirements which allows individual circuits to be managed without having to disturb others.
• MultiCircuit management (MCM) for mass fiber deployment such as for FTTH requirements which allows simple storage and fiber splicing for up to 24 splices in one cassette.
• Splitter cassette for an easy integration of passive devices such as splitters or CWDM elements into the network.

The access to the fibers is possible by folding away neighbouring cassettes meaning that all previously spliced fibers remain undisturbed. The ACSSCM cassette has the same dimensions as the ACS-MCM cassette, but fibers can be spliced on both the front and back side.

The easiest and most reliable way to fix the "drop cables" on the base of the cassette system. For fixation, the cables need an aramid yarn and depending on the quantity of aramid, the pull forces might vary.

ADSL/VDSL broadband services are delivered over the historic copper telephone network infrastructure. New technologies like Vectoring and G.fast achieve higher data rates through existing copper over short distances. Operators therefore need to bring fiber closer to subscribers, which is achieved by upgrading existing street cabinets containing only copper to those containing fiber and related active equipment. A variety of options is available to accommodate additional fiber access points in already very densely populated cabinets.
