“Formula Student” is a competition in which students from around the world compete using electric racing cars that they have built themselves. HUBER+SUHNER supports several universities by providing RADOX cables for their racing cars. In 2013, two of these teams took first place in different categories.
In “Formula Student”, the students design and build a single-seater racing car. Over 400 university teams compete against each other in contests all over the world. The race cars are assessed on different categories, such as design, cost management and acceleration. The winner is thus not simply the team with the fastest car, but the team with the best overall package in terms of design, race results, cost management and sales planning.
Winning cars with RADOX cables
HUBER+SUHNER's Automobile Market Unit supports several teams that compete in "Formula Student". The AMZ Racing Team took two first places in the competition in 2013, and is number 1 in the world rankings. At the competition in Spain, the “URE07” car designed by the team from the University of Eindhoven was the winner in all static disciplines and took first place in the “acceleration” trials. The teams from the University of Southern Denmark and the University of Saarland also used HUBER+SUHNER cables in their cars.
Taking the world record
The AMZ Racing Team from ETH Zurich and Lucerne University can also celebrate success off the "Formula Student" track. On 3 November 2014, the students broke the world record for the fastest 0-100km/h acceleration of an electric vehicle with their electric racing car "grimsel". The AMZ Racing Team broke the existing record of 2.134 seconds in its very first run. During the course of the day, the team increased its performance, achieving an official best time of 1.785 seconds. "We are delighted with this world record and congratulate AMZ Racing Team on its success," said Heinz Oesch, Market Manager Automobile Unit at HUBER+SUHNER.
Robust and thin cables for racing cars
According to Product Manager Automobile, Marc Moser, robust yet thin cables are essential in racing cars to save space and weight. RADOX cables from HUBER+SUHNER are used for all connections in the vehicle. In other words, wherever high requirements are imposed for resilience to temperature, chemicals, and electrical and mechanical effects. Electron-beam crosslinking of the shell material gives the plastic strength and makes it capable of withstanding such high levels of vibration.
