Outdoor environments present a number of challenges to network operators and connectivity providers. In many applications, there is often limited space available to install active and passive devices and achieve high fiber density. Performance can also be affected by extreme weather conditions.

To this end, HUBER+SUHNER has developed the Splitter Fan-Out (SFO) Outdoor cable system, the ultimate solution for network operators looking to deploy a cost-effective and space-saving product for Passive Optical Network (PON) applications.

Handling harsh environments

As a 3-in-1 offering, the SFO Outdoor system combines a patch cable, breakout cable and a splice cassette within one multifunctional solution. Optimised for outdoor areas and distribution points in more extreme environmental conditions, the solution builds on the same advantages as the existing SFO system.

Durability and longevity became the key focuses during the developmental process to overcome the most demanding environments where humidity and extreme fluctuations in temperature are prevalent. Even at temperatures ranging from -25°C to +70°C, users leveraging the solution will see no impact on performance, ensuring reliable output throughout the network structure.

Maximising space

Like the SFO Indoor version, the ultra-small plastic splitter enclosure maximises the available space. In fully equipped distribution cabinets, up to 30% more space can be gained through the use of SFO Outdoor. This can then be utilised for additional components. With multiple versions available, the compact solution can be integrated into most existing fiber optic applications, with an easy installation and handling process alongside higher fiber density. The result is an optimised total cost of ownership and a reduction in time and resources for the user.

Improved performance

The SFO cable system is the ideal solution for customers looking to upgrade existing P2P infrastructures to xPON applications. Users can connect an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) to an Optical Distribution Frame (ODF) in a central office, as well as outdoor distribution points. Application areas include the central distributor (central offices), outdoor cable distribution points (such as point of presences (POPs) or street cabinets) as well as overall building distribution.

The intelligent splitter solution design from HUBER+SUHNER reduces unnecessary complexity and maximises signal performance, reducing the number of connections required. This results in a controlled quality of the entire system.

Installation and maintenance are made easier due to the simple design of the solution, which also makes optimum use of available space and helps network operators to expand their range of services. At the same time, any faults found within the network can be quickly located and rectified.
