HUBER+SUHNER publishes detailed sustainability report: environmental impact reduced by 24 % year-on-year

29.06.2021 - 10:00 (CET)

In its 2020 sustainability report, the HUBER+SUHNER Group delivers, for the first time, detailed information about its performance and goals in the areas of sustainable growth, human rights, working conditions, business ethics, procurement, community engagement and the environment. Many of the published facts and figures were collected for the first time worldwide in 2020. The environmental performance indicators are shown in a five-year comparison (2016 – 2020). Due to the importance for the company and its key stakeholders, the three topics of sustainable growth, greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, as well as community involvement and development have been given special focus moving forward.

"We have embarked on an exciting journey that will lead us and our stakeholders into a sustainable future," says Urs Ryffel, CEO of HUBER+SUHNER. "This journey will take us forward step by step. However, we will never reach the point where we are satisfied because we are committed to always setting new and more ambitious goals."

HUBER+SUHNER is on track to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that the company can directly influence (Scope 1+2). Compared to 2019, HUBER+SUHNER was able to reduce these GHG emissions by 21 %. The total environmental impact of the company's global activities decreased by 7 % year-on-year in 2020, and by as much as 24 % in the core eco-balance – a part of the environmental impact that the company can directly influence.

As early as 2016, HUBER+SUHNER committed to a science-based GHG reduction target in Scope 1+2. This target was validated by experts from the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) and adapted to the stricter criteria for limiting global warming to 1.5 °C in 2019. As a result, the HUBER+SUHNER Group is committed to reducing scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions 50 % per added value by 2025 from a 2015 base year. Today, HUBER+SUHNER is already looking even further into the future and has set itself the goal of bringing GHG emissions (Scope 1+2) to zero by 2030 in the period after 2025.

In 2020, HUBER+SUHNER supported community development projects and initiatives around its sites worldwide with an amount equivalent to 0.5 % of operating profit (EBIT). In the current year, the company will develop binding rules for the Group in this field of action. From the 2022 financial year onwards, 0.5 % of the budgeted EBIT will be made available annually for community development, with a minimum of CHF 500 000.
