September saw the start of the pilot phase of a public gigabit Wi-Fi access point on the famous Fan Mile in Berlin, Germany. HUBER+SUHNER is providing Wi-Fi antennas and coaxial cables, thus playing its part in enabling users in the area to surf, chat and stream for free for 30 minutes.

HDPO - high density blade organiser

The high density blade organiser is a 2U high chassis which can be positioned above or below a switch and allows up to 512 harnessed LC duplex ports to be presented with minimal space consumption and air-flow disruption.

The HDBO has a total of 8 × slot positions for either cartridges or fan-outs (4 left/4 right). These slots are designed to correspond with the blade positions of the switch so that pre-connectorised tails can be routed directly from the HDBO into their respective port locations. The chassis is 600 mm deep and can be installed by one person thanks to detachable brackets which can be mounted to the rear rails of the rack before the chassis is fixed.

There are two types of HDBO chassis available. Customers can choose an HDBO which facilitates a closed cartridge system or alternatively an open ruggedised fan-out approach.

CDR, NGR and 19" equipment cabinets

Designed in collaboration with installers and operators, the NGR incorporates many features not possible when using conventional 19" cabinets and splicing panels. For example, the NGR is only 300 mm deep and its "c-shaped design" allows unrestricted access to all internal elements from the front side. This not only reduces installation and servicing time, but offers customers the opportunity to position NGRs back-to-back for double density within a 600 mm standard footprint. In addition, the c-shaped design also allows cables to be patched from the NGR directly to adjacent switch equipment without the need to enter the raised floor void or overhead containment system. This reduces CAPEX and OPEX especially in small POP stations in which only a few racks are located.

HUBER+SUHNER’s NGRs are configured using modular and scalable sub-racks. This "building block" approach offers maximum flexibility with the option of matching fiber upgrades with customer take-up rates. Termination modules support all connectivity types and offer a wide array of applications in a single generic footprint so that one product covers all existing and future customer requirements.

LC Optipack trunk harnesses are used as pre-connectorised backbone links between cabinets in the data center. Generally, trunk harnesses will be connected to the rear side of patching modules and LC jumpers will be used as equipment cords to servers and switches. Backbones are generally deployed with singlemode fiber because only this fiber offers a future-proofed infrastructure for higher data rates. Multimode LC trunk harnesses are not recommended because LC multimode connectors do not offer an upgrade to 40G or 100G over parallel optics.

Optipack transition harnesses provide a transition from MTP connectivity in the backbone to LC duplex connectivity on switches and servers. Instead of using LC patch panels and cords, the harness provides a fast and compact alternative that plugs directly into equipment transceivers. Many of the data centers today are designed with multimode MTP backbones because this is the most flexible and future-proofed
way of adapting from one type of connector to another.

Optipack MTP-MTP conversion harnesses

Conversion harnesses allow users to convert their existing MTP backbone cables to an MTP type which matches their active equipment. Conversion harnesses are a low-loss alternative to conversion modules
because they eliminate one mated MTP pair across the link. Many of today’s legacy infrastructures are built using a Base-12 MTP backbone design, however experience shows us that this connector is rarely used on higher data rate switches or servers. Currently Base-8 is the preferred connector for 40G (SR4) transceivers and Base-24 is the preferred connector for 100G transceivers (SR10).
The wide variation of MTP connector types in the modern data center has led to some confusion concerning the identification of different Base-types. HUBER+SUHNER conversion harnesses are supplied with colour coded boots so that users can quickly identify the required connectivity type. This is particularly important with conversion harnesses that have different connectors at each end of the assembly.

Optipack trunk cables are high density multi-stranded cables which form the backbone of the data center. Available in different fiber-counts up to 144 fibers, the Optipack trunks reduce the installation time by consolidating multiple sub-units into a single cable. This approach significantly reduces the overall diameter of the cable and provides much better space utilization of cable routing channels.

Optipack trunk cables are available with 8, 12 and 24 fiber sub-units so that users can deploy Base-8, Base-12 or Base-24 infrastructures to suit their MTP connectivity requirements.

Splitters

Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) splitters follow a specific manufacturing process for optical passive network components. They consist of a waveguide array that is applied to a silica chip by using a photolithographic masking process. HUBER+SUHNER offers a wide range of PLC splitters for all applications.

CUBO provides a great variety of hi-isolation bandsplitters, based on Thin Film Filters (TFF): Simple Wideband WDMs which create two channels at 1310 & 1550 nm, each with a bandwidth up to 100 nm. Or different CWDM bandsplitters for CWDM upgrades and extensions from e.g. 4 channels to 8 channels. Here, an important characteristic is the number of skipped (not-useable) channels, reaching from 0 to 2 channels.

Our Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) Splitters are a complementary splitting option to the fused couplers. When it comes to higher splitting ratios (> 1:4) they offer a lower loss and an overall better performance.

This makes them the ideal choice for FTTx applications with splitting rations of up to 1:64. We offer them as plain devices with or without connectors but as well packaged in accordance with your specific needs in splice trays, cassettes, line cards modules etc.

HUBER+SUHNER Cube Optics has specialised on optical wavelength division multiplexing. We offer all types of optical muxes, ranging from simple Wideband WDM over Coarse WDM to Dense WDM. We are able to combine the different WDM grids and/or cascade several muxes in order to create optimal solutions suitable to each customer’s needs.

We are very much aware, that each customer has a specific background and therefore a unique network architecture. In order to suite individual needs, we have products that are aimed for point to point or ring deployments (OADMs), that mix and match specific lambdas of different grids or use band splitters in order to allocate more than one wavelengths to certain locations.

LISA - side access fiber management systems

LISA is a dedicated high-density fiber management system commonly used as a centralised cross connect in the main distribution area (MDA) of large data centers. With a 300 mm depth and full access from the front side; LISA cabinets can be positioned against unused walls, at the end of cold aisles or back-to-back on a single floor tile.

LISA racks have a density of 1500 LC ports per rack or 3000 LC ports per tile when placed back-to-back. For MTP applications the density is 1080 or 2160 MTP ports respectively.
The main difference between LISA and conventional 19" panels is the fact that LISA is fully accessible from the front side. This means that users can install, patch or remove fiber trays simply by sliding out the tray. This feature is much more attractive than 19" panels which generally require access to the rear side of the cabinet. Patching to the LISA rack is fast and easy and a dedicated slack storage area for jumpers allows users to make "any-to-any" patching with just two lengths of cord.

LISA fiber trays are the side-facing connectivity blocks that are inserted into tray units within high density CDR and NGR racks. Designed for speed of installation and improved accessibility, the LISA fiber trays can be installed and removed in under 10 seconds. fiber trays are available to cover a wide range of applications including pigtail splicing and MTP-LC transitions.

LISA patching trays are generally used to build a cross-connect (system-to-line) configuration either within the same optical distribution rack (ODR) or between adjacent ODRs and servers with highest flexibility when using pre-terminated and factory tested cable systems.
Cable systems can be patched easily thanks to a sliding and pivoting design. Cables enter the patching tray from the rear left and right hand side of the tray unit and are then horizontally managed before entering the patching tray.

The LISA standard tray unit is a high-density chassis which manages pigtail splicing or MTP-LC transition fiber trays inside the centralised cross-connect rack. Incoming backbone cables enter the tray unit from the left hand side and jumper cables are connected on the right hand side of the tray unit.
Due to 19 inch fixings at the rear of the tray unit, full access can be enjoyed to all incoming and outgoing fibers and the integrated service loops allows the fiber tray to be inserted and retracted quickly and easily.
Standard tray units are supplied in 7U units with a density of 15 x fiber trays in total. Fully loaded 47U high CDR racks will accommodate a maximum of 6 x 7U tray units or 90 x fiber trays.

Within the LISA side access portfolio, HUBER+SUHNER offers a sub-rack which allows the integration of any LISA fiber tray into a standard 19" equipment cabinet. Flexible mounting options at the rear of the optimised distribution unit (ODU) make cable fixation quick and easy and bend-limiting conduits give ultimate protection to the incoming fibers. Patch cords are routed to the front side of the ODU and can either be guided to the rear of the cabinet (around the vertical rail) or vertically (along the front of the rail if sufficient side space is available within the cabinet). The ODU has a lockable steel door which provides security to the internal connections. This feature is particularly beneficial in collocation areas where multiple subscribers occupy the same rack space.
 

LISA - front access fiber management systems

The LISA front access system is focused on speed of installation and network security during installation or maintenance. The LISA front access system represents a modular group of products that enables seamless connection of passive optical networks especially in central office environments. Reliability and performance are key to the success of our industry which is why we have ensured that the highest level of fiber protection and bend-radius limitation are standard across all front access system solutions. The center piece of the front access system is a unique and versatile compact module that can be used for pigtail, direct cable splicing or for the integration of pre-connectorised passive components such as splitters.

LISA compact modules for MultiCircuit (MCM) applications combine simple installation and maximum security within an optical network. An integrated loose tube storage facility in each module allows easy removal of the splicing machine without disturbing neighbouring modules. In telecommunication environments, the compact module is particularly suitable for simple physical connections between the equipment and the passive infrastructure by means of inter-connect or cross-connect.

The LISA BTU enclosure is a suitable sub-unit for accommodating patch cords, manifold cables or breakout cables such as SMARTLINE or MASTERLINE cables. Pre-terminated and thus factory-tested cable systems allow high fiber count links between the equipment and the passive infrastructure which can be installed on site in a matter of minutes. Breakout cable ends such as SMARTLINE cables can be securely housed in BTUs.

The rack mount slide-out type BTU enables distribution, termination, patching, storage and management in one unit. The BTU supports cross-connect architecture and provides the transmission of the equipment interface in a passive network equipment rack. Each distribution enclosure incorporates a slide-out drawer to allow full frontal access and operation. The distribution enclosures use a fiber guide mechanism which guarantee fiber bend control. Horizontal cable guides are also incorporated on the front of the patch panel to allow the horizontal routing of patch cords. The fiber distribution enclosures can be mounted in standard 19" equipment rack or in the LISA NGR, respectively CDR rack platform.

The CTS splice box is the ideal product for connecting micro-duct systems or loose tube cable installations. With the modular LISA ACS cassette system, the options between SingleCircuit, MultiCircuit, splitter or combined applications are easy to realise. As the CTS is designed as a pure splicing device, it offers the possibility to connect blown-in fibers with cable pigtails in a simple way. A further benefit of the CTS is the hinge system which turns up to the front and allows optimal access to all installed cassettes.

The fiberframe lite is a 19" patch panel made from solid steel which allows the user to splice or patch various cables and cable systems in a standard 1U height 19" frame. It can accommodate up to 24 adapters such as SC simplex, LC/LX.5 duplex. With the latter, a density of up to 48 fibers per 1U can be achieved. The multifunctional back plate allows the user to bring different cables and cable systems into the back of the panel without having to exchange various back plates. A telescopic drawer ensures the access to the back of the connectors and to the splice cassettes. For splice applications, the well-known ACS splice cassette accommodates up to 24 fibers per cassette using either heat shrink or sandwich splice protectors. The cassette allows the user to store fiber overlength neatly and securely within the cassette and the hinge mechanism ensures the access to any cassette without tools.

Each housing is delivered with a mounting kit (M5), Velcro straps and cable ties.

The fiberframe is a 19" patch panel made from aluminium which allows the user to splice or patch various cables and cable systems in a standard 1U height 19" frame. It can accommodate up to 24 adapters such as LC, LX.5, SC and E-2000™. In addition, maximum flexibility is ensured thanks to exchangeable front plates for a wide range of supplementary adapter types. The panel has a density of up to 48 fibers using LC/LX.5/ E-2000™ connectivity and allows the user to bring various different cables and cable systems into the back of the panel, fixed with easy exchangeable back plates. A telescopic drawer ensures the access to the back of the connectors as well as to the splice cassettes and offers a storage area for loose tubes which is separated from the splicing and patching area inside the housing. For splice applications, the well-known ACS splice cassette accommodates up to 24 fibers per cassette using either heat shrink or sandwich splice protectors. HUBER+SUHNER offers a wide range of high-quality splitters with pre-terminated fiber ends integrated in modules. Such modules are either used for monitoring applications or in PON networks having a low split ratio with a maximum of 2:16 per module.

Optical switches

Polatis' highly reliable piezoelectric Directlight® beam-steering technology sets the industry standard for lowest optical loss and highest performance. With more than a billion port-hours accumulated on deployed units, the Polatis technology platform delivers a broad range of class-leading all-optical matrix switch products into demanding applications. At the core of Polatis optical switches is our patented DirectLight beam-steering technology that makes connections using compact piezoelectric actuators to align collimated beams of light from opposing arrays of input and output fibers with minimal loss, distortion or interference between paths. Alignment is maintained using feedback from integrated position sensors to ensure connection stability over time, temperature and external disturbances. Switching occurs completely independently of the power level, colour or direction of light on the path, enabling pre-provisioning of dark fiber and avoiding concatenation of switching delays across mesh or multi-stage switched optical networks. MASTERLINE Ultimate Small Cell (MLU SC) is the most innovative cabling system developed by HUBER+SUHNER to date. MLU SC is a factory-sealed, compact, modular, pre-connectorised, rugged, "plug & play" fiber optic installation solution system for installing Small Cells in various scenarios.

It is designed to support stand-alone installations of 1 to 4 radios per node or as a daisy chain solution of 1 to 3 radios per node or demarcation point.

MLU SC also offers the ability to integrate passive WDM modules into its compact footprint allowing to install multiple radios where fiber exhaustion or limited fiber backhaul opportunities exist. Input and daisy chain ports can be connectorised with Q-ODCs (2 to 24 fibers). Thus, the system can be moved easily if network equipment needs to be relocated. Radio output ports are all Q-ODC-2 for easy-to-install OEM specific fiber optic jumpers. Without any doubt – MLU SC is a true vendor agnostic, multi-carrier Small Cell installation solution.

Street cabinet solutions

Street cabinets are metal or plastic housings placed above ground often on pedestrian pathways. They enable a relatively easy and rapid access to fiber circuits and can handle large fiber capacities. In many ways, they can offer ODF type of flexibility. Street cabinets are often used to terminate larger feeder cables and manage distribution cabling including microducts for blown fiber and/or subscriber drop connections.

Street cabinets also store splitter devices in PON architectures and allow flexible splicing and/or patching for customer-dedicated fibers. Very often they also house active equipment to support Vectoring and G.fast services over copper. Street cabinets need to be secure and strongly built to withstand vandal attacks and traffic accidents.

The core products for fiber management systems are the splice cassettes. The "ACS" (Advanced Cassette System), offers a flexible and modular system which fulfils all fiber security requirements such as bend radius. The Advanced Cassette System (ACS) is a modular and easy-to-use fiber cassette system that can be put together without tools. 3 types of cassettes are available which support high-level fiber infrastructure.

The HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution can be installed underfloor or overhead and provides a secure and stress-free routing channel for fiber optic cabling within a data center. Curved fittings such as crosspieces, tees and elbows are specifically designed to protect fibers so that a minimum bend radius of 30 mm is maintained at all times.

Unlike conventional cable baskets and ladders, the HUBER+SUHNER fiber containment solution offers lateral support along the complete fiber length. This reduces the risk of macro-bending and micro-bending of the individual cables.

In order to reduce installation times and simplify the complete assembly process, HUBER+SUHNER supply all duct components pre-assembled with joiners. This unique feature can reduce installation times by as much as 50 % and reduces a lot of the complexity involved in connecting straight ducts of different lengths to other components. Because a straight duct always requires at least one joiner, we assemble this in the factory so that full-length ducts can be connected in the fastest possible time. We also pre-fit the screws on the unmated side of the joiner to further improve handling and reduce installation times.

No special tools or expertise are required to connect components allowing accurate layouts to be made with customer floor plans using VISIO stencils. Optical Telecommunications Outlets (OTO) are used for fiber optic termination of the respective residential cabling. HUBER+SUHNER‘s Optisocket manages up to 4 fibers with a minimum bending radius protection of 15 mm. To connect the customer premises equipment (CPE) with the OTO, an optical connection cable (OCC) is used. Depending on equipment-specific connectivity, HUBER+SUHNER offers a large range of different types. The Hofis system combines HUBER+SUHNER’s optical outlet (Optisocket) with a pre-assembled low-bend installation cable offering easiest installation of fibers in the living area of end customers.

The metal boxes WBH and WBC use the LiSA side access technology and give the installer a consistent modular system from the Central Office to the In-house area. These high quality lockable metal boxes are easy to install and internal fiber trays enable a flexible and modular expansion to any network. The LiSA side access system is focused on speed of installation and speed of access. The LiSA fiber tray can be installed safely and quickly, and access can be made at any time without the need for tooling and without the need to disrupt pre-installed live fibers. Reliability and performance are key to the success of our industry.

The highest level of fiber protection and bend-radius limitation come as standard. The LiSA fiber tray is supplied with up to 36 × pigtails which have been pre-stripped and neatly stored ready for connection. Because the pigtails are pre-stripped (outer coating removed), we are able to store longer pigtail lengths inside the tray and the process of fusion splicing is more consistent and repeatable.
