A dedicated Wi-Fi network is built along tracks to provide reliable broadband wireless networks between trains, stations and along the trackside. This ensures a robust broadband connection to the train.

Components on board
The Wi-Fi signal is converted from the roof-top antenna using a communication gateway and distributed in the form of an Ethernet signal, for example to the various Wi-Fi access points in the train.

  • Roof-top antennas
  • Flexible jumper cables
  • Low-loss feeder cables
Technical approaches to increasing the data rate:
  1. Use of MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) technology
  2. Communication using various frequency ranges:
  • Wi-Fi: 2.4 and 5 GHz
  • WiMAX: 2.6 GHz
  • Other ISM bands
  • Other local frequency ranges
Use of MIMO technology Directional versus omni-directional antenna Use of SPOT antennas at the front of the vehicle

Trackside components
HUBER+SUHNER supplies all the passive components
required to establish the trackside Wi-Fi network:
  • Antennas
  • Radio frequency cables
  • Power splitters
  • Earthing clamps
  • Lightning protectors
  • Fiber optic cable systems
  • Fiber management
