RADOX® anti-capillary cables for pedelec systems
RADOX® anti-capillary cables are special, longitudinally sealed cables for power transmission. To date, these cables have primarily been used for automotive applications. New applications have now been discovered for the anti-capillary cables - in pedelec systems.
A pedelec (pedal electric cycle) has an electric motor as its drive unit, a battery and an on-board computer. The rechargeable batteries, usually attached to the frame or the luggage rack, provide energy for the electric motors in the drive system, which is controlled using the on-board computer located on the handlebars. Depending on the drive system, the bikes are able to reach speeds of up to 45 km/h. The battery can be recharged using a charger.
Protection against liquids thanks to anti-capillary cables
On a pedelec, RADOX® anti-capillary cables function as water blocks in the cables that lead from the battery and the control unit on the handlebars to the electric motor. A grease-like filling material in the cable prevents liquids, such as water or oil, from passing through the cable and damaging the electronics or sensors. This filling material has been specially developed by HUBER+SUHNER and is silicone-free. The use of anti-capillary cables removes the need for expensive sealing solutions such as waterproof connectors, because the cable provides the sealing function.
Only four centimetres of cable
A recently-completed project posed the challenge that this cable could be only four centimetres long in the pedelec system cables, while still providing an anti-capillary function. The RADOX® anti-capillary cables were produced by HUBER+SUHNER in Pfäffikon, Switzerland, and then field tested by the customer. The cables passed the field test with flying colours. A total of eight kilometres of anti-capillary cable have been delivered thus far, and more kilometres of cables have already been requested.
RADOX® anti-capillary cables, which were previously used in automotive applications, are now also being used for pedelecs. Potential therefore exists for this cable, and other HUBER+SUHNER cables for automotive applications, to be used in applications outside of the automotive market. This opens up new application areas for HUBER+SUHNER and new markets for cables from the automotive sector.®
