As mobile networks move from 5G Advanced toward early 6G trials, macro cell sites are under increasing pressure. Higher radio counts, rising peak power demands, and growing fiber density must now be accommodated within the same physical footprint, while enabling faster deployment, simplified site management, and readiness for what comes next.
Traditional macro site cabling concepts are struggling to keep pace.
To meet these evolving requirements, HUBER+SUHNER introduces MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid (MLEH) - a next generation hybrid cabling platform designed specifically for future ready macro cell site installations.
Why must macro site cabling evolve?
Macro sites are no longer static, one time installations. They must support continuous change—higher peak power radios, denser fiber infrastructures, and frequent upgrades—without increasing site complexity.
Operators, tower companies, and neutral hosts are therefore challenged to modernize sites while:
Reducing installation time and site complexity
Preparing infrastructure for 6G ready architectures
Meeting global regulatory requirements
Improving sustainability and material efficiency
What is required is not another isolated solution, but a single hybrid cabling platform that can scale technically and operationally as network demands evolve.
Introducing MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid (MLEH) – A new generation of hybrid cabling
The MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid (MLEH) is a highly modular, scalable hybrid fiber and power cabling system for macro cell RRH/AAU installations, designed to support:
5G Advanced rollouts
Emerging 6G trials and pre deployment scenarios
Global site variants - rooftops, towers, and railway trackside
MLEH is built on three core pillars: more fiber, more power and more flexibility.
More fiber - density without complexity
Increasing radio counts drive higher fiber requirements. MLEH expands fiber density while keeping installation complexity under control.
Key capabilities
Up to 24 fiber breakouts per assembly
Support for up to 9 RRHs (3–4 fibers per radio)
Patented internal fiber divider enabling a continuous, spliceless fiber path
Why this matters
No fiber splicing, enabling faster installation
Fewer failure points, resulting in higher site reliability
Future expansions possible without site rework
More power - ready for high power radios
5G Advanced and future 6G radios are driving higher energy demands, particularly on macro sites.
MLEH is engineered for these requirements with hybrid cable cross sections of up to 25 mm² (3 AWG), power peaks of up to 3300 W. Voltage rating is either -48 V DC to 74V DC, which is the typical telecom supplies, or 230 V AC (CE compliant).
The 230V AC version has significantly lower power loss and voltage drop, making the system suitable for long cable runs when installing high-power radios across global markets.
Power enhancements
Hybrid cable cross sections up to 25 mm² (3 AWG)
Power peaks up to 3300 W
More efficient power supply with 230V AC
New 50 A connector range (IEC/UL)
More flexibility - one platform for every macro site
Unlike traditional box based solutions, MLEH is designed as a modular hybrid cable platform that adapts to diverse deployment requirements.
What makes it flexible?
Any mix of fiber and power - from 2 to 24 breakouts
Custom configurations delivered in ~3 months
Classified as a cable, not a box (reducing certification burden in many markets)
Fully OEM agnostic
Options for bird and rodent protection
This flexibility enables faster project execution, simpler global deployment, and long term adaptability as radio strategies change.
Sustainability built in
Sustainability is a core design requirement for modern macro sites.
MLEH integrates a power divider architecture that minimizes the current derating required by the US National Electrical Code, enabling:
21–37% copper savings (region dependent)
Reduced cable weight and material use
Lower CO₂ footprint per site
Longer lifecycle through modular reuse
As a result, MLEH combines future readiness with resource efficiency.
Designed for global macro RRH applications
MLEH is optimized for a wide range of macro deployments, including:
RRH installations on towers
Rooftop macro cells
Railway trackside networks
Harsh outdoor environments
The platform supports ODC connectors engineered for extreme conditions, ensuring reliable connectivity from BBU to RRH across diverse installation scenarios.
A platform for 6G readiness
Developed ahead of mass 6G deployment, MLEH enables operators to prepare sites early, reduce future retrofit costs, and accelerate next generation network upgrades.
The MLEH portfolio is supported by:
High quality product renderings and illustrations
Macro site application visuals (tower, rooftop, railway)
Detailed hybrid breakout configurations
MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid - One cabling platform for the next network era
With increased fiber density, higher power capability, enhanced flexibility, and built in sustainability, MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid (MLEH) enables network operators to deploy efficiently today while preparing confidently for tomorrow.
Power only
MASTERLINE Extreme Hybrid is available as power only configuration, so called MASTERLINE Extreme Power.
For existing installations that already have enough fiber optic cables installed, but too few copper cables or too small copper cross-sections, it makes more sense to install a MASTERLINE Extreme Power without fiber optic cables.
